We're Ty & Annie Tatro, founders of Redtail Overland. At Redtail, we strive to build the finest overland products possible using the highest quality components. We believe we aren’t the only ones who crave craftsmanship in an increasingly assembly-line world. For those seeking something more than typical, we see you. We’re building these products for you.
Before forming Redtail Overland, Ty spent 12 years at a luxury expedition vehicle manufacturer, becoming President, co-owner of the business and lead designer of their line of overland vehicles. Annie spent 6 years at the same location, becoming the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer and directing the customer experience and growth of the brand. In 2020, we set our sights and passions towards something new.
We began dreaming up a product that more closely aligns with how we personally like to access adventure, something that would accommodate our family and all our gear but remain nimble and hassle-free for backcountry travel. We knew we didn't want to tow or buy a larger RV so how could we solve the issue of space without creating a bigger footprint?
As we began to imagine the perfect camping solution for our family, we drew from our extensive background in two contrasting experiences - designing and manufacturing luxury off-road vehicles and our personal travels in a truck with a bare-bones rooftop tent. There are benefits and drawbacks to each. A large RV offers the comforts of home, but the size hinders where you can travel, while a truck + rtt setup is nimble, but too cramped and simple for extended trips with our family.
The solution was to build up, not out. If we could create a true extension of our living space "upstairs," we could greatly increase the functionality and comfort of any expedition vehicle. A simple rtt up top was not enough. We knew our version of a rooftop camper needed to be hard-sided, secure, climate controlled, easy to setup and breakdown, all-season, and accessible from inside the vehicle via a pass-thru. Essentially an extra bedroom, not a tent. We wanted it to be lightweight, bright and airy, stylish, and packed with cutting edge features. We wanted large windows to take advantage of rooftop views. We wanted it to be well-insulated, cozy and quiet. Nothing like our vision existed. Our wish list was extensive and there were many challenges to overcome, but our manufacturing and design background gave us the skillset to create exactly what we wanted. Redtail Overland was formed and the first hard-sided rooftop camper was created - the Redtail Skyloft.
We follow a high-end, slow-craft approach with fair wages and ethical manufacturing here in the US. Every Skyloft is handmade by our small team in Longmont, CO and availability is extremely limited.
We are excited to offer something completely new in the overland industry. We welcome you to the Redtail community and look forward to being a part of your next adventure. Thank you for your support.
