Beyond the Adventure Van: The Skyloft Van as an Expedition Vehicle

Say the words expedition vehicle and a particular image comes to mind: a massive four-wheel-drive truck with oversized tires, an over-sized camper, and enough fuel, water, power and equipment to disappear for weeks at a time.

There is good reason for that. Purpose-built expedition trucks can provide tremendous capability and autonomy. But size and weight bring their own compromises, especially when travel moves onto narrow mountain roads, soft terrain, tight trails, or simply into a crowded town or fuel station.

Adventure vans sit toward the other end of the spectrum. They are generally lighter, narrower and easier to maneuver, giving them access to places larger vehicles may struggle to reach. But many camper vans make a different set of compromises: limited water and power, minimal climate control, no interior shower, or a floor plan dominated by a permanent bed.

The Redtail Overland Skyloft Van was designed to bridge that gap.

Our objective was to combine the durability, self-sufficiency and livability expected of a purpose-built expedition vehicle with the mobility of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. In other words, build an expedition van that two people, or a family, can genuinely live in for weeks or months without making the vehicle so large and heavy that it begins limiting the journey.

That distinction is important, because expedition capability is about far more than how difficult an obstacle a vehicle can cross.

What Makes a Van an Expedition Vehicle?

Expedition travel asks a vehicle to perform across a remarkably wide range of environments.

One day might involve hundreds of miles of interstate. The next could bring washboard, snow, mud or a narrow forest road. There are grocery stores, border crossings, fuel stops and cities between remote camps. Weather changes. Temperatures drop. Supplies run low. Equipment gets dirty. Systems need service. A true expedition vehicle has to work through all of it.

That means designing for more than off-road performance. It requires balancing four attributes that shaped the Skyloft Van from the beginning:

Capability. Autonomy. Livability. Mobility.

We wanted a vehicle capable of sustained travel beyond pavement and extended periods without hookups. It needed enough onboard water, electrical capacity and storage to support genuine off-grid travel. It needed to remain comfortable when weather forced life indoors. And it needed to stay light, narrow and maneuverable enough that its own dimensions didn't become the limiting factor in where it could go.

That last requirement influenced almost every decision we made.

Weight Is Capability

Weight may be one of the least glamorous specifications in the camper van world. For an expedition vehicle, it is also one of the most important.

Camper vans accumulate weight remarkably quickly. Plywood cabinetry, wood paneling, tile, stone countertops and residential-style finishes can create beautiful interiors, but every pound consumes payload before passengers add water, food, clothing, tools, recovery equipment, bikes and everything else required for extended travel.

At Redtail Overland, we approach the problem from the opposite direction.

Weight is considered throughout the design and manufacturing process, sometimes down to removing grams rather than pounds. Materials and construction methods have to satisfy three requirements that frequently compete with one another: they must withstand rough-road travel and remain as light as reasonably possible, while still looking and feeling like substantial, high-end materials.

A completed Skyloft Van weighs between 9,600-10,100lbs against an 11,030lb GVWR, leaving roughly 1,430+ pounds of available payload, depending on options.

That payload matters. But keeping the vehicle's base weight under control does something else: it changes how the van travels.

Our team learned that lesson long before we began building the Skyloft Van. We’ve traveled extensively in expedition vehicles weighing around 20,000 pounds and experienced firsthand what happens when that much mass enters remote terrain. On narrow shelf roads, we have felt the road surface begin to crumble beneath a heavily loaded rear axle.

Experiences like that change the way you think about capability.

A large expedition truck can have exceptional suspension, enormous tires and impressive ground clearance. None of those things make its mass disappear. On soft ground, a deteriorating shelf road or a questionable bridge, weight itself can become the obstacle. It also influences braking, recovery forces, tire loading and the energy transmitted through the vehicle every time a wheel drops into a hole.

The Skyloft Van isn't a rock crawler, and it wasn't designed to be one. Its AWD system, upgraded suspension, all-terrain tires, additional ground clearance, underbody protection, onboard air compressor, front and rear winches and recovery equipment are intended for real-world travel beyond pavement.

But one of its most useful pieces of expedition equipment may simply be what isn't there: thousands of pounds of additional vehicle.

Sometimes the Best Capability Is Fitting

Large expedition vehicles have obvious advantages. They can carry enormous quantities of water, fuel and equipment, and their habitats can provide extraordinary amounts of living space. But they also occupy a lot of real estate.

Width matters when trees close in on a forest road. Wheelbase matters through tight switchbacks. Rear overhang matters when crossing washes and steep transitions. Height matters beneath branches. And when a road unexpectedly ends, overall length becomes important very quickly.

A vehicle's ability to cross difficult terrain is only one measure of expedition capability. Its ability to fit through the places you're traveling matters too.

The Skyloft Van is built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 XD AWD 170” high-roof platform. The completed van measures approximately 25 feet 6 inches long and 8 feet wide.

The 170” Sprinter is a versatile platform, giving us enough room to create a genuine living environment, while the vehicle footprint remains manageable on mountain roads, forest roads, highways and in towns.

That mobility matters beyond the backcountry. Long-distance overland travel inevitably involves fuel stations, grocery stores, restaurants, ferries, border crossings, cities and thousands of miles of pavement. A vehicle that can move comfortably between remote terrain and conventional infrastructure has an advantage that can be difficult to capture on a spec sheet.

Living In the Van, Not Just Out of It

Many adventure vans are designed around the assumption that most of the journey happens outdoors.

For weekend trips and recreation-focused travel, that can be an excellent approach. A compact van is easier to drive and park, and if the vehicle primarily provides a place to sleep, prepare a quick meal and carry gear, there is little reason to make it larger.

Extended expedition travel asks more of the interior.

Eventually, bad weather arrives. So do extreme heat, freezing temperatures, wind, smoke, insects or simply the desire to close the door after a long day and be comfortable.

On a trip measured in weeks or months rather than weekends, an interior shower stops feeling extravagant. A comfortable place for two or four people to sit matters. So does the ability to cook indoors, work at a table, store equipment, use the bathroom and move around the vehicle without continuously converting one space into another.

We wanted enough room to live in the van, not a floor plan that required its occupants to live primarily outside it. Even a 170” van, however, has finite floor space.

Our solution was to stop trying to put everything on the same floor.

The Skyloft: Going Up Instead of Out

A permanent bed consumes an enormous amount of valuable space inside a camper van or expedition vehicle. A fixed or drop-down bed in the rear competes with the lounge seating, storage, bathroom and other functions that make long-term travel comfortable.

Our patented Skyloft rooftop camper changes the geometry of the entire van by moving the primary bedroom upstairs.

The insulated, hard-sided carbon fiber Skyloft creates a dedicated, climate-controlled sleeping environment with a comfy, full size mattress. Heat and air conditioning operate on a dedicated Nest thermostat, and the insulated hard-sided construction and dual pane windows provide an all-season sleeping space rather than a conventional fabric-sided rooftop tent.

Because the primary bed no longer occupies the rear of the van, the main level can accommodate a large dining lounge, full galley, enclosed wet bath, substantial interior storage and a spacious heated garage.

In effect, the Skyloft adds living space without making the vehicle longer or wider – a fundamental element to our design.

Larger expedition campers typically create interior volume by increasing exterior dimensions. Conventional camper van layouts divide a limited floor area among competing functions. The Skyloft allows us to use the third dimension instead.

For extended travel, the result is an overland van that functions much more like a small home than a vehicle organized around a bed.

Designing Off-Grid Autonomy around the Vehicle

Expedition vehicles need resources. But more isn't automatically better.

The Skyloft Van carries 40 gallons of fresh water, 30 gallons of grey water and 45 gallons of fuel. Larger expedition trucks can carry more, but those capacities come at a cost.

Forty gallons of water alone weighs more than 330 pounds. Doubling the capacity means carrying another 330+ lbs everywhere the vehicle travels, in addition to the weight of the larger tank and supporting structure.

Our approach is to carry enough capacity for meaningful off-grid travel without designing the entire vehicle around the most extreme conceivable scenario. The physical size and mobility of the Skyloft Van help make that possible.

Pulling into a grocery store, campground, fuel station or town to replenish supplies doesn't become an expedition of its own. The van can transition easily between remote travel and conventional infrastructure.

That allows us to exchange some ultimate water capacity for lower weight, greater payload and better mobility. For the type of expedition travel the Skyloft Van was designed to do, that is a trade worth making.

Off-Grid Power as a Complete System

Electrical systems offer another example of why individual specifications rarely tell the entire story.

The Skyloft Van uses a 14 kWh lithium battery system, supported by a dedicated 7 kW alternator and 330 watts of solar. The lithium battery bank provides substantial stored energy. The dedicated alternator can replenish that energy while the engine is running, and can even kick on automatically when our system detects the batteries are at a low state of charge. Solar serves as a supplemental source, helping offset smaller continuous loads such as refrigeration and lighting while the van is parked.

This is a good example of how we approach the Skyloft Van as a complete system rather than a collection of maximum specifications. The question isn't how large a solar number can we advertise. The question is whether the combination of energy storage, alternator charging and solar generation supports the way an expedition vehicle is actually used.

Four-Season Systems Are Expedition Equipment

Long-term overland travel places demands on vehicle systems that may never become apparent during a weekend at a campground.

Where does the plumbing run when temperatures fall below freezing? How is electrical equipment protected from heat, moisture and vibration? Can important components be reached for service? How does cabinetry tolerate thousands of miles of rough roads? What happens when the van is carrying passengers, water and equipment rather than sitting empty on a showroom floor?

The Redtail Overland team came to the Skyloft Van with decades of experience designing, building and traveling in purpose-built expedition vehicles. That background influenced the obvious parts of the van, but arguably matters even more in the parts owners rarely see: electrical architecture, plumbing, thermal management, material selection, construction methods, weight distribution and serviceability.

The Skyloft Van incorporates heated floors, an enclosed heated wet bath, a heated rear garage, and climate control for both the main cabin and upper sleeping area. The carbon fiber Skyloft itself is insulated and hard-sided, creating a true four-season sleeping environment above the van.

Those systems provide comfort, but comfort isn't separate from expedition capability.

If an expedition vehicle is intended to support extended travel through changing climates and seasons, keeping its occupants, water systems, equipment and living spaces functional is part of the mission.

A Different Set of Expedition Vehicle Compromises

There is no perfect expedition vehicle, and the Skyloft Van doesn't eliminate compromise.

A much larger expedition truck can carry more water and equipment. A 144-inch Sprinter is easier to maneuver. A dedicated four-wheel-drive trail vehicle can tackle terrain we wouldn't attempt in a Skyloft Van. A conventional motorhome can provide considerably more interior space.

The real question is which compromises best suit the journey.

The Skyloft Van is designed for travelers who want to go far, spend meaningful time away from conventional campgrounds and comfortably remain on the road for extended periods. They want an enclosed shower and real bathroom. They want a permanent bed without sacrificing their living room to get it. They want substantial battery capacity, four-season climate systems, recovery equipment and storage for the gear that comes with extended travel.

They also want a vehicle that doesn't feel enormous every time the road narrows or they pull into town.

Achieving those things in one vehicle requires resisting the temptation to maximize every individual specification. More water, more batteries, more cabinetry, more equipment and more interior volume eventually create more vehicle. At some point, the fundamental advantages of building on a van platform begin to disappear.

For Redtail Overland, the objective has been to stop before they do.

Beyond the Adventure Van

The adventure van has earned its place in overland travel. For weekends and short journeys built primarily around outdoor recreation, its compromises can be exactly the right ones.

The Redtail Overland Skyloft Van is a different animal.

We wanted the systems and self-sufficiency expected of a purpose-built expedition vehicle, the living environment necessary for extended travel, and the mobility that makes a Sprinter-based overland van such an appealing platform in the first place.

Achieving that balance has required years of engineering around weight, space, energy, water, materials and construction - and a willingness to prioritize the capability of the entire vehicle over the size of any single specification.

The result isn't the smallest camper van. It isn't the largest expedition vehicle. And it isn't an extreme off-road machine.

It’s a luxury expedition van designed for long-distance, off-grid travel: a vehicle made to be lived in rather than simply traveled out of, while remaining light enough, maneuverable enough, comfortable enough and self-sufficient enough to keep exploring when a weekend becomes a month and the pavement disappears behind you.

That, to us, is what makes the Skyloft Van an expedition vehicle worth considering.
